In space, the trend goes towards small and standardized satellites that can be launched in the hundreds. But the small size, especially within the launcher limits the possibility of advanced missions that require high power (large solar arrays), high data downlink (large antennas) and so on. A way around this limitation is the use of deployable structures like solar arrays, appendices, antennas or sails which are unfolded once in orbit allowing new high-performance applications that are currently only possible with larger satellites.
